[edit] Featured Media

Whats going on with the Featured Media section? (with all due respect) I would think that to someones first time viewing that portion of this site would think it looks like garbage. I'll try to reclame that section back from whoever got copy/paste happy, but i'll be really busy the next two weeks. So I would like to hear from someone who is willing to help out.--spike005 20:33, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

You mean the images? At the time of setting it the traffic was low so had the images repeating for a few days in a row, I'll start adding some more images in and removing the duplicates. Feel free to suggest media to replace various images!

[edit] question for the wise...

what are those green positive and red negative (possibly points) numbers in the Recent Changes page?

--Leezy16 00:54, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

They show the number of letters/numbers that have been added or removed in that edit

[edit] Useful Links

Do we really need a link to the Beta Registration, now that it's been released? Evanfardreamer 16:54, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

True we don't. :) I'm slowly trying to build a new main page and that part will be going completely and having something more contextual and useful in it's place.

[edit] News

The news should be updated to say that the game is fully released in the US - Kind of important news I'd say! A bit scared to edit the front page myself though :) Yarral 08:54, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Laceish Plains

The Update Notes 1.1.2.3 - May 22nd state:

"Players should no longer get stuck when entering Lacheish Plains."

The warning concerning this zone can therefore be removed/edited accordingly. Don't know how to access it, sorry. Winnetou 09:33, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] google ad covering up the image in upper right corner

If you look at the image, it seems that the Google Ad is covering up the image in the upper right corner. I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring this up, or if it has been brought up before. I am using the site's admin preferred skin.--Rockfang 16:42, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Question with Quests and Items.

I've been looking at some of the other MMO wikis (notably the WoWWiki, since the game has been dominating the market) and I was wondering, should we model the wiki after it, like adding articles on specific quests and items? Or should we go for a different approach, like making an article for a quest line and grouping similar items together in a single article?

---DoubleDee0614 06:52, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Do you mean how we are doing it atm with Quests? example
Daworm  talk / cont 07:15, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't think the questlines in AoC are ever long or varied enough to split each minor section into a separate page. I assume DoubleDee meant something along the lines of this. It doesn't make sense IMO to split the AoC quests further.
I agree that one page per "chain" would be best, however the quest infobox doesn't support chains with multiple steps. The majority of quests do seem to fall under the 2-step "do X, return to Y" formula where all the rewards are tied to the return step. Some quests with more than 2 steps may have multiple sets of objectives and rewards, so should the infobox summarize the sum of the rewards for the quest, or support multiple objective/reward step listings? I'll try to find an example, the completed quest log only stores names and not what the objectives/rewards were. --Kadaan 01:16, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I do have a question / comment on itemisation, however. I've gone to update a number of items on the AoCWiki and found that they already exist but with vastly different stats from the one I have in-game. Am I an exception or do the items given (even quest rewards) get their attributes rolled on a player to player basis? If this is the case and no items have standard attributes I don't see how we can effectively catalogue them.
Items of the same name at different levels may also have different stats. A basic example is [Frayed Mitts]. Not sure how we want to do mouseover tooltips for items like that. --Kadaan 22:36, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

» Cragz 09:04, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I have a funny feeling they are done based on the level/class you are. As I've yet to roll another char and play through as that it's hard for me to really compare. Which makes it a bit of a pain tbh. Perhaps we could list it at the lowest available? I'd personally like to document them all, unless there is a better suggestion?
Daworm  talk / cont 09:41, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I believe class and talents affect the ingame tooltip. For example, [Vyre] shows up for me, as a HoX, as 62.6 dps. Someone edited the page, complete with a screenshot, of the item at 114.2 dps. From what I gathered from talking with people is that the uploader must be a barbarian with the +2h damage talent. I'm not sure if there are classes who get a reduction to damage, but listing the lowest might be the best bet. --Kadaan 22:32, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

The Quest Template's been updated to introduce main and sub-sections. This is all well and good, however the template doesn't appear to be working properly. is adding the category "{category} Quests" but not "{category} Quests|FullPageName". See the Category:Aquilonia Quests for examples - all listed under Q. I'm not 100% confident with template changes yet so if someone could go in and rectify that it'd be great.

» Cragz 08:54, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

The issue with this is that quests at this stage are merely added with a prefix of Quest: and it is not an actual namespace. As a result the Article name when you add it to a category is, Quest:Name which puts it in as Q in the ordering in the category. I could probably work around this by using the |name= tag and have it you simply enter the quest title there for the infobox, and it categories automatically for that. So doing |name=Kill Picts automatically does . I'll poke it now.
Daworm  talk / cont 10:00, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Ok, simply use |name=Name of Quest and it will categorise it properly, otherwise it will simply use the page name (that is the full thing with "Quest:Name of Quest" which puts it in under "Q"
Daworm  talk / cont 10:23, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Additionally: Recent quests as added by Kadaan have xp rewards at a given level. Do all quests have variable experience rewards? Do we have a formula for this?

» Cragz 08:54, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

From what I've seen, I'm not 100% sure the XP scales on a per level basis, it might on a say... every 5 levels. As I had a quest at level 25 that someone had at level 27 and it was the same quest amount reward, I'll need to compare this in-game further later. Might try this with some of the repeatable quests actually.
Daworm  talk / cont 10:00, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps quest experience is based on the colour of the quest in your log?:

» Cragz 11:00, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

The only quests I'm aware of that do this (which I assume you're referring to my additions last night) are the Noble's District repeatable quests. You can do them once per day (perhaps more often) and the zones scale with level. Example: Quest:A Fools Dream --Kadaan 17:36, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Went back tonight at 59, and they do give more exp/cash than they did at 58. --Kadaan 04:46, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Zone Infobox Template Proposal

The Geography category serves its purpose, but the Age of Conan world is broken up into zones (hubs, adventure regions, dungeons, resource gathering - excuse the lack of official names I don't currently have access to the game but rest assured they're listed on the world map) and it'd be a much more useful resource if we collated information about zones in a more structured manner. I've mocked up a zone page complete with infobox at User:Cragz/Sandbox, albeit without any information (which would fill it out somewhat), and think with a few tweaks it could be turned into an infobox template to be used for every form of zone.

Thoughts?

» Cragz 10:18, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking of something like this the other day, wasn't sure where to start. I did do an initial page up for this idea. Guide:Tortage but it needs more structure and layout, perhaps incorporate some of that into your zone information? On that note, should we perhaps have this zone information etc. done up on these pages ? IE: Guide:Tortage Guide:Tarantia or similar?
Daworm  talk / cont 10:40, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
I think the guides definitely have their place, however individual zone pages, in my humble opinion, would serve to better inform those searching for specifics. Keep in mind Guide:Tortage covers a region rather than a zone (Tortage itself contains a hub, 2 adventure zones, 2 dungeons and a tavern that I'm aware of) therefore individual zones can be referenced from within. Much as I hate to reference WoWWiki, examples such as Tirisfal Glades and Deadmines highlight what I'm talking about.

[edit] Item Infobox Icons

Many of the icons are reused on multiple items. We should start organizing them so people can view the existing icons and add the appropriate one, if it exists. Is there a way to put a category on an uploaded image? If not, should we make a page somewhere to display and categorize them? --Kadaan 09:53, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Indeed there is a way... you can simply edit the image page after an image is upload like any ordinary article and add . It's just a matter of organising a set of common namings for said pages though... I really should get some policies written up too...
Daworm  talk / cont 10:44, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New Stylesheet?

A lot of the colors don't match anymore and render some text unreadable. Is it going to be reverted, or should I go ahead and edit the pages I see that have unreadable content? --Kadaan 23:23, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Can you provide links to where the CSS is buggered? And yes, the wikia has had a bit of an update in style as originally mentioned happening here. I'm working on a new stylesheet completely and will copy a preview of it here soon for discussion and improvements.
Daworm  talk / cont 00:44, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
The poll on the main page, for example, is unreadable with the new CSS. The highlight and bgcolor classes are gone, so tables utilizing them don't look as good (Gemcutting, Zug (server) and Dungeon, for example.) Some pages like XP_Chart chose colors that matched with the old scheme but not the new. --Kadaan 02:40, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Strange, the scheme colouring hasn't changed... can you provide a screenshot? Although I'm at work and everything is darker here to me... can you provide a screenshot?
Daworm  talk / cont 04:55, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
This is from the main page, where the poll is: --Kadaan 05:41, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
wth ? That looks like the new stylesheet colours... CERTAINLY shouldn't be affecting you now...
Daworm  talk / cont 05:59, 20 June 2008 (UTC) Can you press CTRL + F5 ??
Daworm  talk / cont 05:59, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Still looks the same. It looked like that a work when I originally posted, and also here at home now on both my machines. One running Firefox 2, the other Firefox 3. --Kadaan 06:10, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
AHA! In preferences there was a checkbox to "Let the admin choose the skin" or something. It was unchecked. I never changed any of those settings before, so maybe in the move it turned that setting off? Might want to check with other registered users if they're seeing the same thing. --Kadaan 06:12, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
I'll poke the techs about this. Thanks!!
Daworm  talk / cont 06:21, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
ok now. I've got the new css loaded up here here and it's active on this page. It's only on that page with the lovely use of some javascript, but if you wish to see it on ALL pages, then by all means copy it to your own monaco css file. :) Either way, some tweaking IS needed, and feedback as well.
Daworm  talk / cont 00:45, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Ok, definitely going to need some help here in building some nice "shades" to use on css_shade_1 - 4. I did a quick hack test on my personal monaco.css file with shade_1 = #111111 2=#222222 3=#444444 5=#444444. Didn't work :)
Daworm  talk / cont 01:32, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Okay now, what things can you guys suggest for editing? I've done some minor tweak to the style of the boxes... If you look at this page you'll see the boxes on the right with the small spacing in the headings -vs- what is on the left, the standard tabled layout.... which do you prefer? I'm inclinded to the using the format on the right there.
Daworm  talk / cont 12:28, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Move Proposal

Anyone against moving Dungeon to Portal:Dungeons ? And using the tags to format the page like User:Daworm/Temp/Mainpage ? Just altering what is actually on there?

Don't __have__ to use those tags, but we can give the wiki some consistent page styling for key pages and I feel the Dungeons page would be a good one to make a "portal" along with the Bestiary, Quest, UI and Mods. We can easily expand the "portals" that we will use as well. ((I have yet to copy in all the nav-tabs css though)).

Daworm  talk / cont 05:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Looks good to me! Definitely agree that the main page needs to more focused on current players instead of potential players. --Kadaan 05:43, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Happy to have the tables from Dungeons moved to Portal:Dungeons, keeping only the descriptive information on the original page, albeit with a link. Unsure of what it is you mean by "using the tags to format the page like User:Daworm/Temp/Mainpage" though. Do you mean Nav-Tabs?
» Cragz 08:49, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Ah, my bad. I meant in regards to the left/right column layout, if you look at the code you'll see <mainpage .. > </mainpage end> etc. in there. Just mostly the layout I was referring to really.
Daworm  talk / cont 00:20, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Guides

The addition of Jab's Levelling Guide made me question how we're dealing with guides in general. My impression was the whole idea of the wiki system made sure individuals weren't credited, and all work was that of the collective. This is part of the wikipedia ethics model and is what sets gaming Wikias apart from sites like GameFAQs.

My question, therefore, is how we're going to adopt guides in general. Will we have a hundred levelling guides, all credited to a single author with an individual take on the process, or is information going to be collated in, for example, a Levelling Guide article which can be discussed and contributed to by every user?
» Cragz 10:29, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
I was planning on having a sort of Portal:Guides and then with all the multitude of guides people create take the best advice from them and form a central "official aoc wiki guide" for various things. With discussions on the best format... at the end of them we can have "other similar guides". There is someone I have been e-mailing who has done up countless guides for WoW and I've seen a few (they are quite good too) and they plan to release some for AoC as well. As a result using the aforementioned Portal... have the top section of it the "official aoc wiki guides" with the links below it links to other "player created guides".
But to really kick that into gear, need to finish off the new main page design. :)
Daworm  talk / cont 12:18, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Poorly written pages with no actual information

I often see new users creating new pages (such as Homeland) that don't really contain any useful information, poor spelling/grammar, or as a question instead of an article (Quest:Emerald Eyes).

What's the appropriate thing to do with these pages?

--Kadaan 20:25, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

If there is no other content on these pages I would suggest either.
  1. Move the information to the Talk page if applicable
  2. Delete it and provide a link to the Forum:Index for asking questions
  3. Redirect the page to a more relevant article
Seem fair?
Daworm  talk / cont 23:30, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New Mainpage & Stylesheet

I think it's near complete... there are various entries we will need to correct around the place... most noticeably the css_shade_1 to css_shade_4 colours, but that I think we can do after the fact. Unless someone who is a bit more savvy with styling is willing to poke around a little bit on the colours? MediaWiki:Skin/Newsite.css <-- new style. Feel free to copy it to your local monaco.css file so you can tweak it locally :) If there's no complaints... I'll throw it all up in the next few days.

If you wish to edit the mainpage go here If you wish to see the mainpage with the new css on it (that's if you don't copy locally as above) then go here

Daworm  talk / cont 01:31, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
I really like it. I'm glad you went with the thin square borders, it looks good that way. Unsure about the multiple colored bars on the top though, are they color coded based on content? It's just a bit much having them all different colors. I'll see if I have time this afternoon to play around with css_shade_x colors. I assume we want to go with the gray/blue shades? --Kadaan 18:58, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Changed the hue, then the shade just a tad, see if these values work for you. --Kadaan 21:17, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
  /* colour shades for backgrounds and borders */
  .css_shade_1 {
        background-color: #101030;
        border-color: #000030;
  }
  .css_shade_2 {
        background-color: #202030;
        border-color: #000030;
  }
  .css_shade_3 {
        background-color: #303040;
        border-color: #000030;
  }
  .css_shade_4 {
        background-color: #303050;
        border-color: #000030;
  }
  /* For highlighting rows on mouseover */
  .highlight:hover {
        background-color: #333333;
  }

  ...

  /* Template:Ambox design */
  .ambox {
	border: 1px #606060 solid;
	background-color: #101050;
  }
I just picked various colours to see how it would go... not as great as I'd hoped, it looks nice yes. But not nice enough IMO.. Might make them larger and put the "title" of the boxes inside them with a single background colour, one for the _main_ boxes and one for the _sidebar_ on there. I'll load up your css shortly. BTW it's at MediaWiki:Skin/Newsite.css if you wish to tweak it yourself :)
Daworm  talk / cont 23:00, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Finally got my arse into gear and loaded it up :) Looks nice! Want to put the code into your monaco.css file and click "Random page" a few times and let me know anything else that could be tweaked?

I'm glad to see someone is working on a new Main Page. (My edits in the last few hours are my first foray into wiki editing.) I chose to add my maps (only the first one is in) to this AoC wiki because it seems to have the most content, but almost chose another wiki because of this one's Main Page (call me eccentric). None of the Table of Contents links show on the first page on my display at 1152x864--ack. I have to scroll down to see the first one. If anyone is interested in a quick look, the nicest/most functional wiki Main Page that I've used is at http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page. I'm willing to make this AoC Main Page center area similar to the 4 quadrant/color Table of Contents at the above link--unless someone is already working on a new Main Page! (I assume the banner ad has to stay at the top :( Please correct me if I'm wrong.) The main thing to me is just to get the main links higher up up up on the page. The opinions of the more senior editors (that's everybody) will determine whether I do anything or not. Please let me know!

Greg J 05:02, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Hey Greg J, thanks for the input you've had so far. You are more than welcome to redesign the main page however unlike GuildWiki which have special allowances due to the size and duration they have been active for (and the fact they were an imported wiki and didn't start on wikia), they have a bit of an allowance on their mainpage. The Banner Ad and Box ad in the top right of it is required to stay. If you want, copy the code from the current site and throw it into a Sandbox page under your own user area and edit away. When you are done, feel free to poke me with what you have. I'm only meager in my design skills and if someone can do better? Then do better! :D If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, please try to keep the initial comment in the "summary" field as is, and add your comments after that (as it shows on the RC as a certain "topic" of discussion has been replied to and not just a global page edit.

[edit] Template:Infobox NPC

NPC infoboxes seem a bit scant (e.g. Laranga). Are they this way to match the in-game tooltips? The dungeon infoboxes (e.g. Sanctum) could very easily extend to NPCs. User:Cinaed has been adding his own design to NPCs (e.g. General_Zarathus) which, imho, improves on the template we have in place. I could quite easily take the information therein and do some theme matching to bring the infobox up to date and looking dungeon-esque.

Thoughts? Obviously if we want to keep the in-game feel this is a no-no, but, to me at least, a thorough infobox does help present information in a more structured, accessible manner.
» Cragz 12:45, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
There is a very similar one that was setup on the AoC Wiki at the same time Special:Createpage was installed, which btw we need to get some templates for it happening. See MediaWiki:Createplate-list and the subsequent MediaWiki:Createplate-Blank MediaWiki:Createplate-Character etc. etc. for how to create / modify them... :) When we get "templates" happening we can turn this feature to be on by default for red links as well to make article creation easier for the general passerby if needs be. BUT!!! Have a look at Template:Usercharbox which is in effect on User:Damaruskt if you want to.

[edit] How to play on AoC Wiki server ???

I've register and then I start the game and go to the Username and Password.Then I type My Username and password and then Faild to connect. PLS PLS HELP.

There is no "aoc wiki" server for Age of Conan, you need to have an active account with Funcom in order to play on their servers. I suggest you ensure you activated your account here and if you still have trouble, shoot an e-mail to accounts@ageofconan.com.

But I wana play for free not PAY $15 a mouth.I was serchig for Privet servers if there are any if someone knows pls tell me .

The way Funcom run their servers at this stage, you won't find any Private Servers, nor would they be advertised from here. I suggest you search elsewhere for this information, I personally do not know of any in existence either.

[edit] Armor Sets

I've added a few templates, similar to the wowwiki ones to the Class Gear page. There are tons of data that needs to be filled in... if anyone can help, that would be great. I also modified the .png icons for the classes to a more structured format. The older ones didn't have a similar naming convention, making it really hard to use in a template. Now you can find them as IconLarge_<class>.png or IconSmall_<class>.png The more info we can populate into these sections, the closer we get to the tipping point. --Morsvita 05:06, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey Morsvita, I like that a lot! There is much to clean up and organise on the wiki still so I think you for the effort so far in helping with that. Looking great so far and look forward to your future development :)

[edit] Upcoming Features - new section required?

Just wondering, anyone willing to try and build up/maintain a page for "upcoming features/changes to aoc" page? So people can easily click to see what is coming out?

IE: New dungeons, areas, game features, game tweaks, etc.?

Daworm  talk / cont 00:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm willing to try. Just let me know what I need to do, and some formatting instructions. Xackery 07:46, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
I did start something like that here actually. Feel free to take it over, it's simple formatting but if you want to do something a bit more funky go right ahead. If you know HTML at all, you can use a simple table format to lay it out neatly in.

[edit] Changing poll to own page?

I'm thinking of just having the poll on it's own page, and merely have the section as "Wiki Poll" with large letters for "See the poll for ABC" or appropriate wording at the time. Should there be no poll active at the time then have it set to "prompt" people to suggest a poll. Main reason is due to the ads on the main page, it pushes it down a bit too far, so figured I'll trim it up a bit more neater.

Example, Touch of Death (Feat obtained ability for Dark Templars), or Rite of Blood? I was tempted to put it in the spell section, but that seems a little inaccurate.
