The river Styx (also known as the Nilus or Nile) flows from the east of Stygia. It originates from the shadowy hinterlands southeast of Keshan and flows north, turning at a near right angle, then runs west through the pastoral meadowlands of Shem to empty into the Great Sea. The River Styx forms a natural border that separates the two kingdoms of Stygia and Shem.

The "River Styx" comes from the ancient Greeks afterlife ritual, where in order to pass into hell, you must first swim through the River Styx, which is where Robert E. Howard derived the river's name from.
