I met a group of troubadours who were down on their luck. Their instruments were stolen by bandits and with the instruments went their livelihood. I offered to recover them and they accepted my help gratefully. I should look for the bandits somewhere in the city.

I have recovered the crate of instruments, though the bandits themselves were long gone. I assume that once they discovered that they could not use or sell the instruments they left them behind. I should return the crate of instruments to the minstrels at the tavern.
Note[]
Despite the quest telling you to "return the crate of instruments to the minstrels at the tavern", the minstrels are actually outside the western gate, not at any tavern.

I met a group of troubadours who were down on their luck. Their instruments had been stolen by bandits, so I offered to recover them. I discovered the instruments packed in a crate, abandoned. I carried the crate back to the minstrels, only to discover that all of the instruments had been broken. The bards were not very impressed.
