Gemcutting
From AoCWiki
Taking advantage of the skills of the armor and weapon smiths, the gemcutter specializes in honing and crafting gems to decorate and enhance equipment.
While some gems only have minor effects, others found in crypts or carried by those practicing darker arts may carry strange powers that can be harnessed by the gemcutter's craft. Enemies tend to drop rough gems that the gemcutter can turn into powerful enchantments, and these can be placed into other crafted items to make them more potent.
As the gemcutter is familiar with working with a fresh set of armor or weaponry, they can also provide some more straightforward modifications such as counterweights or other reinforcement.

[edit] Getting Started
Gemcutting may be acquired at level 40 as one of your two professions. There is a trainer in each of the three Resource and Gathering zones who will get you started for a fee of 7 60 . Paying this fee will teach you every tier 1 recipe and give you the first quest.
[edit] Quests
The gemcutter trainer taught me how to make beginner gem cuts. The book of crafting recipes lists which gems to cut, the tools which are required and how to cut each gem accordingly. The gemcutter trainer asked that i return and tell him of my progress. When I have done so, the gemcutter trainer will help me further my training.

[edit] Materials
Every gemcutting recipe consists of a gemcutting kit, purchased from the tradeksills vendor, and a raw gem. Raw gems come in eight different colors in both 'uncut' and 'flawless' forms of 6 tier levels between 40 and 80 for a total of 96 different types. A table of raw gems is available on the Gems page.
Raw gems are dropped by all level 40+ Humanoid NPCs.
The gemcutting kits are consumed upon cutting a gem, so you'll need to buy a kit for every gem you cut.
[edit] Recipes
Gemcutters get three different cuts for each type of gem, and each cut has two qualities. One cut that fits in one-handed weapons (Rhombic), one for two-handed weapons (Oval), and one for all Armor (Oblique). The gemcutter picks which of these three shapes they want and cuts the gem. The resulting gem is created with a random prefix based on both the color of the gem as well as which shape they choose. There is no way to influence which prefix you get.
Quality:
- 'Uncut' gems will produce good quality gems (Size 1 aka 5) when cut.
- 'Flawless' gems will produce superior quality gems (Size 2 aka 10) when cut.
Shapes:
- Rhombic & Trillion gems may be socketed into one-handed weapons only.
- Oval & Teardrop gems may be socketed into two-handed weapons only.
- Oblique & Cabochon gems may be socketed into armor only.
A list of prefixes for each color/cut combination, along with stats at the six tiers, is available on the Gems page.
[edit] Known Bugs/Features
- You still need to zone before cutting a gem to get quest credit
- Stats appear to disappear when zoning or after death. There are no official dev posts on this bug so it is unknown if the stats are really disappearing.
- Gemming a second/third gem into an item won't display till you zone.
Selling a gemmed item to a vendor and hitting undo will give you the item back, minus the gems.(Fixed 6/23/2008)Cloaks are still un-socketable.(Fixed 6/23/2008)Gems (cut and uncut) don't show up on the AH(Fixed 6/26/2008)
